Herts Music Centre

Freshman Guitars are available across the world with more stores and regions joining the family all the time. But music is about more than just instruments, and with that in mind we’ll be featuring some of the great shops and venues that mean when you play Freshman, you’re also part of a creative, friendly, vibrant community.

First up is Herts Music Centre. We sat down with the staff to get an insight on what makes this such a great shop, how they support new music, and what they think of Freshman Guitars.

So to kick things off, tell us a little about Herts Music Centre. How long has the shop been open, and shopwho would we meet if we stopped by?

South Hertford Music Centre opened on the 3rd of September 2012 in St Albans (AL1). Our centre is located away from the high street on a small but perfectly-formed trading estate with plenty of free parking and lots of room for our 9 purpose built classrooms. The centre is open 6 days a week, until 8pm on weekday evenings & offers both tuition & a comprehensive range of instruments, accessories and books, as well as servicing instruments.

During the week you would meet James who gained BMus at Middlesex University, Danika who gained a BMus at Canterbury Christ Church University, Amelie who is our Saturday girl and any of our teachers.

What do you think makes Herts Music Centre unique? What do you do that’s different from the competition?

Herts Music Centre is considered unique by the fact that it is not only a retail shop but also has a repair centre and teaching area. The lessons take place on sight so if a student needs to buy a new instrument, book or accessories they do not need to search around.

freshman 2Another unique aspect is that the staff at the centre are all musicians so the advice we give comes from personal knowledge and experiences. We also believe a fun and friendly approach is the way forward.

Everyday people visit shops and so we try to make it an enjoyable and memorable visit. If we do not have a particular item in stock we will try to get it in for you and if that doesn’t work we will recommend other businesses to you. The music industry needs to work together and so that is what we try to do. Honesty is the best approach so we will always offer the best advice even if it means we lose the sale.

Taking it from beginner, to intermediate, to working/semi-pro guitarist, what Freshman Guitar would you recommend to these players?

For beginners it depends on what age they are and what music they enjoy. For the younger beginners we recommend the Manuel Ferrino classical range as the nylon strings are softer on the fingers and they are not too expensive.

For beginners who are around 11 years and older we would recommend either a RENF or a RENOC as they are fantasticJames quality but are not too expensive.

Intermediates will have an idea of what sound they are after but we would recommend a solid top guitar so something in the FA1A, Maple or Apollo series would suit.

Moving up to Semi-professional we would recommend an all solid guitar but although we can recommend products we generally get the individuals to try the instruments out as the sound and feel of the instrument is important and every person has a different taste.

What is your favourite Freshman Guitar?

Personally I love the Open Plains series. I think the tone of these guitars is a lot warmer than some of the cheaper models and they feel easier and smoother to play.

Great. Well, it’s a busy time for shopping right now. Are you going to be running any cool promotions over the next few months?
We currently have a few deals going on in store. We are selling the SCD acoustic hard case for just £30.00 when bought freshman 3with the FA1DC12 (Freshman 12 string acoustic cutaway).

When you buy a RENF guitar we also are providing a free gig bag with the purchase (*subject to availability).

As for the New Year we intend to do a deal with the RENOC series where you get a guitar, capo and tuner for £199.99 when bought with their first block of 5 lessons.

Thanks for talking to us today, and thanks for being part of the Freshman family!

Thank you and watch this space as with the retail side of business underpinned by the teaching side, we have a strong future-proof business plan to take forward into the future.
